Compounding at Pharmacy
Matters
The age-old tradition of pharmacy compounding is almost a lost art.
Once prevalent in the 1940’s and 1950’s, compounding is the
art and science of preparing pharmaceutical formulations from scratch
right within the walls of the pharmacy.
Pharmacy Matters has a 350 square
foot compounding laboratory within our Iowa City pharmacy. This state-of-the-art
compounding laboratory has all of the necessary high-tech equipment
to make any type of product that you can imagine:
- Capsules
- Troches (lozenges that dissolve in the mouth)
- Liquids and suspensions
- Creams and ointments
- Gels
- Lollipops
- Suppositories
- Sprays
- Transdermal gels (gels which deliver medications through the
skin and into the bloodstream)
- Veterinary prescriptions
- Flavoring
Pharmacy Matters does not compound any products that are commercially available. Instead we compound customized products for specific or individual needs. We can also compound products which have been discontinued are temporarily unavailable:
- lactose-free preparations
- gluten-free preparations
- alcohol-free
preparations
- dye-free preparations
- sugar-free preparations
- casein-free
preparations
- specialized dosages
- special dosage forms
- unique flavors
